Priced close to INR 1 lakh higher than the equivalent manual variant.
The Mahindra XUV500 automatic version has been launched today starting from INR 15.53 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The closest competitor is the Hyundai Creta automatic, which too gets a 6AT with a diesel engine.
The company has used the 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission unit that is already doing duty in the SsangYong Tivoli and the SsangYong Korando C (diesel). This is a second generation transmission that uses a torque converter and a planetary geartrain.
The gearbox gets two overdrive ratios (the 5th and the 6th), and has a creep function too. This function is useful for moving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and for reversing at a slow pace. The transmission also has two uphill driving modes and is capable of automatically adapting to mid- and high-altitudes, and has a manual mode as well.
Mahindra claims that the mileage of the XUV500 automatic is 13.85 km/l. The transmission fluid used in the autobox is said to last for a lifetime, to reduce maintenance costs.

The auto transmission is offered in three variants - W8 (Front-Wheel Drive), W10 (Front-Wheel Drive) and W10 (All-Wheel Drive). All of them use the 2.2-litre mHawk turbocharged diesel engine that is used in the manual variants, in the same tune of 140 bhp and 330 Nm.
