To be heavily influenced by the S-Class and C-Class.

Mercedes is currently developing the fifth generation E Class (codenamed W213), which will reportedly make its debut at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show (NAIAS 2016) in January 2016. IAB's rendering artist, Shoeb R Kalania, has worked on a render of the 2016 Mercedes E Class, based on recent spyshots of pre-production units.

Judging by recent spyshots, the 2016 Mercedes E-Class appears to look like a stretched C-Class, with a curvier design.

The upcoming E-Class will borrow plenty of design cues from the flagship S Class limo and C Class sedan. It ditches the sharp and edgy design of the current model for a rounded approach with less sculpted features.

The front-end sports the familiar twin-slat Mercedes grille flanked by Multibeam LED headlamps, and a new bumper design with larger intakes. As in Merc's new design book, the sides will have two character lines originating from front and rear, respectively, while the rear gets wraparound LED taillamps and a dual exhaust arrangement.

Current Mercedes E-Class was launched in 2009 and was comprehensively facelifted in 2013.

Like the exterior, the interior will also mash the features of the S-Class with that of its smaller brothers. As seen in an older spyshot, the W213 E-Class may adopt a wide display integrated into the dashboard (akin to the S-Class). Expect Mercedes to reduce the button count, offer better interior trim, feature autonomous driving tech and equip it with a top-spec Burmester audio system.

To be based on the MRA RWD platform, the 2016 E-Class will pack a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines, codenamed OM654, alongside existing four-cylinder petrol engines. Reports also suggest that the new E Class will debut an all new range of inline 6 cylinder turbo engines, which will replace the current model’s V6 and V8 engines (AMG variant aside).

For the Indian market, the current Mercedes E Class is one of the bread earners for the company. So the next E Class will likely continue being assembled in Chakan, Pune, soon after being launched as a CBU in mid-to-late 2016.
