At the Nissan 360 media event in California, Brazilian journalists got to sit down with Shiro Nakamura, Nissan Motor Company’s vice president, and discuss about how the Japanese brand plans to quench the undying thirst for compact crossovers in Latin America.

Nissan EXTREM front
The Extrem, described as a “tough street fighter” was the first Nissan concept specifically meant for Brazil. It was penned at Nissan’s design studio in California.

Nakamura-san has confirmed Nissan’s plans to sell the Juke in Brazil. Without giving too many details, he also confirmed that a second crossover based on the Nissan Extrem concept unveiled at last year’s Sao Paulo Motor Show, is one of the eight products Nissan has planned till 2016.

He added that Brazil would need a development center to create specific products for that market. Nissan has such an engineering facility in Chennai, where products like the Datsun Go, Micra Active and India-specific parts like the Duster’s rear AC vent emerged from.

For Nakamura, the current Micra won’t cut it in Brazil. However he desires to sell another global car in the country.

Nissan EXTREM rear
Nissan aims to swipe 5% of Brazil’s market share from the current 2% and the Extrem-based SUV would have to do a Duster for Nissan Brazil to get there.

Nakamura clearly denied any interest in selling the Nissan Terrano in Brazil. The Terrano was conceived to expand Nissan’s participating field in India and “isn’t the right thing to do” for Brazil, according to the senior officer, Noticias Automotivas reports.

Out of the eight launches lined up for Brazil, three models would be manufactured locally.
