VW is working on a 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI (turbo stratified injection) engine and a recent report from Car & Driver suggests that the VW Golf would be the first recipient of this new-age motor.
Volkswagen’s head of R&D, Dr. Hans-Jakob Neusser, confirmed saying -
We are working on this, and you will see it in the Golf.
Dr. Neusser has also mentioned that this engine would be seen on "other models", though he fails to provide the exact details.
Regular readers may instantly relate this 1.0-liter TSI to the VW Taigun concept that was shown at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show. The concept housed a three-cylinder 1.0-liter TSI unit producing 110PS and 175Nm of torque from 1,500rpm.
At that time, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development said -
The torque-strong three-cylinder is an ideal engine for such a compact SUV; it is a companion for driving through the urban environment that is as efficient as it is dynamic.
We can guess without doubts that the 1.0-liter TSI premiering on the Golf is the same engine earmarked for the Taigun when it enters production in 2016. Another candidate for the downsized motor would be the next generation VW Polo (which currently features a 1.2-liter four-cylinder TSI outputting 105PS).
The respective VW cars with this engine would rival Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost which is currently used on the EcoSport, Focus and would eventually find its way onto the next generation Figo.
