The VW portfolio in China is one of the most confusing one in the world. Volkswagen operates through two joint ventures in China – FAW-VW and SAIC-VW. Both JVs have their own set of products which clash with each other in terms of platform, prices, features and many other parameters. To get a gist of how confusing the product portfolio is, our friends at Jalopnik.com have compiled this beautiful article.
We will stay away from all the confusion and come right to the point – China has received a sporty variant of the VW Jetta which is called the Sagitar over there. Called as the Sagitar GLI ( its GLI and not GTi), the car features a modified front bumper, new headlamps, sporty alloy wheels and some GLI badging.
This Sagitar GLI is powered by a 2.0 TSI engine with 200hp and 280nm. Prices for the Sagitar GLI will start around 115,000 yuan (INR 10.12 lakhs).
What is the ‘Idea’ moment?
When Skoda India was preparing to launch the Laura vRS in India, rumormill went wild with the speculation of a 2.0 TSi with more than 200 hp. However, Skoda just garnished the normal Laura with some aesthetic features and fettled with the rear suspension and launched it in the market.
Volkswagen has been struggling to push the Jetta TSi sales in India since quite some time now. Clearly, this new body kit showcased on the Sagitar GLI is a tempting one. I think you should get the gist by now.
Should VW India import the Sagitar GLI kits and launch a special edition Jetta GLI in India?
