Camry Hybrid contributes to 90 percent of sales of the Camry nameplate in India.
Post the reduction of VAT (Value Added Tax) on electric and hybrid vehicles from 12.5% to 5% by the Government of Delhi, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has reduced prices of the Toyota Camry Hybrid by INR 2.3 lakhs. The Camry Hybrid now costs INR 30.9 lakhs as compared to the regular Camry's INR 30.28 lakhs price-tag (ex-Showroom, New Delhi).
Launched in India in August 2013, the Camry Hybrid is assembled at TKM's Bidadi plant alongside the regular Camry petrol. In 2013, only 15 percent of Camrys sold in India were hybrids, whereas in 2014 and 2015, this increased to 73 percent and 86 percent respectively. Now, the Camry Hybrid accounts for as much as 90 percent of Camry sales in India.
In the January-April 2016 period, TKM sold 419 Camry Hybrids whereas only 44 units of the regular Camry. Aside from the Camry Hybrid, TKM also sells the Toyota Prius which is due for a full-model changeover.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder VVT-i engine assisted by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hybride battery pack. The combined system output stands at 205 PS with the hybrid getting an E-CVT gearbox and special low-rolling resistance tyres.
