Mitsubishi unveiled its next-gen MPV in Indonesia yesterday, which, as per reports, is the 'Mitsubishi Expander'. Here's how it compares with its Japanese rival Toyota Sienta on paper.
The Mitsubishi Expander, conforming to the industry trend, has an SUV-like design. It evolves from the Mitsubishi XM concept and features the brand's "Dynamic Shield" face with the headlamps and the grille layout forming an X shape design. The Toyota Sienta looks like a proper MPV, and it has a design unique to itself. It looks more funky and youthful, as opposed to the Mitsubishi Expander which has a rather bold and serious appearance.
The Mitsubishi Expander measures 4,475 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width and 1,700 mm in height. It offers a ground clearance of 205 mm. The Toyota Sienta is 4,235 mm long, 1,695 mm wide and 1,695 mm tall. With a ground clearance of 170 mm, it rides lower like a sedan. The Mitsubishi offering has a much bigger overall footprint, which should translate to a roomier cabin. The higher ground clearance gives it an advantage on rough roads.
The Mitsubishi Expander and Toyota Sienta both are front-wheel drive MPVs. The Expander is powered by a 1.5-litre MIVEC four-cylinder petrol engine. Transmission choices include 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic. The Sienta is powered by 2NR-FE 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 107 PS at 6,000 rpm and 14.3 kg.m (140.24 Nm) of torque at 4,200 rpm. Toyota offers the Sienta with a 6-speed manual transmission and a continuously variable transmission.
