Will arrive in dealerships from April 2016.
The next generation 2016 VW Tiguan has been unveiled ahead of its debut at the VAG Night and 2015 IAA in Frankfurt. The new Tiguan breathes a fresh air into VW's compact SUV lineup, featuring an all new design, better equipment, and a refined engine lineup.
As seen in spyshots, the 2016 VW Tiguan drops the boxy crossover looks for a brand new design that draws influence from the VW Cross Coupe GTE. It features a pair of angular LED headlamps with LED DRLs directly flowing into a grille, large 18 inch diamond cut alloy rims, a small chrome element on the front wing, a chrome line that runs across the side, chrome underlining for the window line, and roof rails.
Coming to the back, it sports a sleek pair of horizontal LED taillamps, larger windscreen, roof spoiler, chrome appliqué on the lower fascia, and twin chrome exhaust tips.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new VW Tiguan has grown in size, measuring 4485 mm long (70 mm increase), 1839 mm (30.5 mm increase) wide, 1633 mm high (33 mm lower), and has a wheelbase of 2682 mm (76 mm longer).
Inside, the 2016 VW Tiguan features a familiar yet premium design that is upholstered with leather and new materials. It offers an optional 12.3 inch Active Info display from the 2015 VW Passat, which displays the instrument dials and navigation in full screen. A 5-inch non color infotainment display is standard, while an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is available as optional equipment.
The Tiguan also comes with a new 3-zone automatic climate control system called Pure Air Climatronic, has the largest panoramic sunroof, and electric 4-way lumbar support and massage function for the front seats.
Even in the base model, the Tiguan comes with safety features like City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring and Lane Assist departure warning system. It also includes a network of seven airbags, including a knee airbag on the driver's side, and the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. Higher variants will feature adaptive cruise control (ACC), Side Assist (lane-changing assistant), Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection, and Area View (360 degree view).
Based on the MQB platform, the 2016 VW Tiguan is claimed to be more than 110 pounds (50 kg) lighter compared to the outgoing PQ35 platform. It will be available in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims, while an R-Line version is also offered
Although VW haven't released engine details, they have divulged that it will offer a total of eight Euro-6 compliant engines (four petrol and four diesel engines), all of which have turbocharging, direct injection, a stop-start system and battery regeneration as standard.
Power outputs are between 125 PS and 240PS, and the company claims that the new lineup is up to 24 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model. While a front wheel drive system is standard in base variants, a 4MOTION AWD system will be offered in higher variants
VW has also introduced a new VW Tiguan GTE PHEV concept at the show, which combines a 1.4-liter TSI engine and an electric motor paired to a six-speed DSG to offer a total system output of 215 hp. The 13 kWh lithium-ion battery enables the PHEV to cover 31 miles in electric power, as well as achieve an estimated 124 mpg (43.9 km/L) on the European cycle.
