According to Automobile, the next generation Volkswagen Golf GTI will produce around 300 hp, which represents a big leap from the current model's 210 hp output (US-spec). If true, it will be more powerful than the current top variant, the 292-hp Golf R AWD. The engine powering the 2019 VW Golf GTI could be a revised version of the 2.0-liter turbo unit or a narrow angle V6 motor.

Also on the cards is a 400 hp Golf RS, similar to the current generation VW Golf R400 concept, which has been green-lighted for production. Other rumored variants include a hybrid/EV (like the Golf GTE). Volkswagen could retain the six speed manual transmission for driving purists, and also offer improved automatic DSG gearboxes routing power through an electronic limited slip differential. Another report put a 10-speed DSG on the next gen Golf, capable of handling up to 550 Nm torque.
