Likely to cost a lakh less than the 3L variant.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched the flagship variant on the Fortuner yesterday, the Fortuner 4x4 AT. Next up, the company will launch a base, entry-level model on the SUV powered by the Innova's 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine.

The Innova's engine will be retuned for the Fortuner.

According to a report on Autocar India, the 2.5-liter engine will make 142 bhp at 3,400 rpm and 342 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,800 rpm. For reference, the Fortuner 3.0L makes 169 bhp at 3,600 rpm and 360 Nm of torque between 1,400-3,400 rpm. Indeed, the engine will receive a retune from its current state on the Innova.

The Fortuner 2.5L will not be available with 4WD, it will come as a 4x2 only. However, TKM will offer this model with manual and automatic transmissions. According to the report, the Fortuner's sales in India are equally split between the manual and automatic variants, and hence TKM thinks there is sufficient market demand for an entry-level automatic variant. Both gearboxes on the 2.5L variant will be 5-speed units.

In terms of features, the Fortuner 2.5L will lose out on HID headlights and navigation system seen on the 3.0L variant. It will still get other features such as leather seats, alloy wheels, parking camera, climate control and music system, not to mention ABS and dual airbags. Hence, it will be priced a lakh cheaper than the base 3.0L variant.
