In order to achieve the milestone, Toyota has shifted from a defensive to an offensive strategy. The company has revitalized its R&D wing in order to come up with exciting new products.

Another big move to improve the sales figures is to adopt the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) which enables simultaneous development of multiple vehicles and component sharing. First of the TNGA cars is expected to arrive sometime in 2015.

The modular architecture will first cover Toyota's three front wheel drive platforms which constitute about half of the automaker's global sales. There are reports that the next gen Toyoa Prius will be based on the TNGA as well.

The TNGA is expected to reduce the product development costs by 20-30% which would be used in developing new technologies, better designs, improving the overall quality of the products. In other words, TNGA is Toyota's weapon to neutralize the threat from VW which pioneered the platform sharing strategy with its MQB and MLB platforms.

With the new strategy in place, Toyota aims to breach the 10 million mark in the years to come. It is to be noted that the company's projected sales figure for 2013 stands at 9.96 million units.
