Company claims production hasn't been affected.
Despite the agitation from workers at Tata Motors' plant in Sanand, Gujarat, the Tata Tiago is on track for its market launch. Bookings for Tata's new compact hatchback opened on March 10, and it's expected to go on sale from March 28. 422 permanent workers at the Sanand plant went on a flash strike on Feb 22, demanding reinstatement of 28 employees who were suspended by the company.
Sources told Business Standard that Tata Motors had an inventory of 1,000 units of the Tata Tiago, before workers caused trouble in the plant and decreasing the production rate from 100 to 50 cars per day.
Tata Motors claims that the plant operations are continuing and that there has been no significant production loss due to the strike. However, they couldn't comment on the inventory or the production rate. They have only confirmed that the Tiago is on track for launch, and the plant is operational. It was reported today by Business Standard that around 250 workers from the Pune plant were brought in to Sanand to keep up with the original production plan.
The Tiago will be positioned below the Tata Bolt and above the Tata GenX Nano. It will come with the company’s new 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol and 1.05-litre three-cylinder Revotorq diesel engines which have an output of 85 PS/114 Nm and 70 PS/140 Nm respectively. Both motors will be offered with five-speed manual transmissions while an AMT would be introduced at a later stage.
