This is the 11th Magneti Marelli factory in India.
Fiat-owned Magneti Marelli has officially inaugurated its manufacturing plant in Manesar which makes AMT kits. The INR 150 crore facility has been operational since July this year. The production target is 1.2 lakh units per annum, while the capacity is 2.8 lakh units.
The company said in a statement, "This facility has been created to address the growing market success that the AMT component has had in India over the past two years and to meet the demand from local carmakers regarding additional future implementations."
Saju Mookken, Country Manager & MD of Magneti Marelli India, said that four to five percent of the Indian passenger vehicle market comprises of cars with different types of automatic transmission, in which over 50 percent is AMT. He mentioned that the share of automatic cars is expected to rise to 30 percent by 2020.
The Italian auto components manufacturer supplies AMT units to Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors, for Maruti Celerio, Maruti Alto K10, Tata Zest and Tata Nano GenX. The company is rivalled by ZF Sachs, based in Germany. The latter will supply to Hyundai and Renault in India, for the upcoming Hyundai Grand i10 AMT and Renault Kwid AMT, it is reported. In the case of the recently launched Mahindra TUV300, the AMT unit is co-developed by Mahindra and Ricardo and the same would likely be used on the Mahindra XUV100 (S101) and Mahindra Quanto autoSHIFT.
