The Ford EcoSport has been launched in China today in a mission to become one of the best selling SUVs in the country.
The EcoSport for the Chinese market will be manufactured by Changan-Ford Joint Venture. Unlike the India spec EcoSport which tucks under the 4 metre mark to be eligible for the excise duty concession, the Chinese version measures at 4.28 metre thereby being more spacious.
The engine lineup includes the 1.5 litre petrol engine which makes do with 107 bhp and 170 Nm of torque, and the hi-tech 1.0 litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine. The EcoSport is offered in 5 variants, the 1.5 litre engine is available with both manual and automatic transmissions but the 1.0 litre EcoBoost gets only the manual option for now.
Chinese media reports that the dual clutch automatic gearbox would be made available with the EcoBoost at a later stage. The EcoSport is touted to be Ford China's weapon to scale back the ground it lost to GM and VW over the past decade.
The base version of the Ford EcoSport is priced at 94,800 Yuan (around Rs. 8.29 lakhs) while the top end variant has a price tag of 127,800 Yuan (around Rs.11.17 lakhs). The 1.5 litre automatic variant is expected to the top choice among the Chinese customers.
