The Tata Tigor EV hit Indian roads towards the end of last year, but its use has been restricted to the public sector. Tata Motors is yet to make it available to private buyers. A report from Autocar India suggests that Tata Motors will launch the Tata Tigor EV for private customers in a phased manner.

The Tata Tigor EV delivers a range of 130 km on a full charge.

The new development was revealed by Mayank Pareek, President, Tata Motors (PV), to the publication. Mr. Pareek said:

It will happen in particular cities first, and then I think it should spread.”

The company is talking to customers and it has received an “extremely good response” for the new EV, he added.

The reason behind deciding to launch the Tigor EV in phases is the lack of adequate charging infrastructure nationwide. The company can offer not only the Tata Tigor EV, but also the Tata Tiago EV, as well as a Tata Bolt EV and a Tata Zest EV. But before getting aggressive with the launches, it has to ensure that the adequate infrastructure is in place.

The Tata Tigor EV measures 3,992 mm in length, 1,677 mm in width and 1,537 mm in height. It has a 2,450 mm wheelbase and a 170 mm ground clearance. It is powered by a 30 kW electric motor that is paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor, sourced from Electra EV, runs on a 216 Ah, 72V battery. Charging the battery from 0% to 80% capacity takes 6 hours (normal charger)/1.5 hours (fast charger). The pure electric's range with full charging is 130 km. Tata Motors claims a top speed of 100 km/h.

The Tata Tigor EV is likely cost around INR 11 lakh (ex-showroom) for private customers. Mr. Pareek has hinted that it may reach showrooms this financial year (by March 2019).
