The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV when it was released in 2013. It is one of the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicles in many markets. It was given a mid-cycle refresh back in March this year. As of last month, Mitsubishi has sold more than 1,44,000 units of the plug-in hybrid SUV globally.

The Outlander PHEV’s powertrain comprises a four-cylinder petrol engine, two electric motors (one at the front and one at the rear), a generator that transforms the engine power into electricity, front power drive unit, rear electric motor control unit and a battery placed under the floor. The pre-facelift model’s powertrain offers a pure electric range (JC08 test cycle) of 60.8 km.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features the new PHEV 2.0 plug-in hybrid powertrain. In place of the 4B11 2.0-litre MIVEC petrol engine, there’s a new 2.4-litre MIVEC petrol engine now. The new engine allows for higher torque, smoother operation, and overall higher efficiency. Mitsubishi is yet to release its complete specifications. So far, it has released only the following improvements:

  • Generator output increased by 10%
  • Rear motor output increased by 10%
  • Drive battery capacity increased by 15% (to 13.8 kWh)
  • Drive battery output increased by 10%

The new model’s 4WD system comes with two more modes in addition to Normal and 4WD Lock: Sport and Snow.
