First global model from Proton.
The Proton Iriz global hatchback which went on sale in Malaysia recently has made its Thai debut at the ongoing Thailand International Motor Expo 2014. The Iriz which is based on an all-new platform is the first global model from the aspiring Malaysian automaker.
The Iriz also sets a new design direction for the company with clean and sporty lines. The interior is also modern and the overall material quality is a notch above the previous Protons which were mostly restricted to the domestic market.
Powering the hatchback is a set of four-cylinder petrol engines displacing 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre. The smaller engine is tuned to deliver 93.8 bhp and 120 Nm of torque while the bigger unit makes 107.2 bhp and 150 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
Proton has managed to achieve 5-Star ASEAN NCAP crash test rating and the car's safety features include six airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, Hill Hold Assist, Hydraulic Brake Assist and TCS.
The Proton Iriz has a starting price of RM 42,438 (around INR 7.80 lakhs) in Malaysia and is expected to be launched in Thailand early next year to take on the likes of the Honda Brio.
