The 2015 Ford Mustang was unveiled simultaneously in six different cities across four continents on Dec 5 last year. The latest iteration which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the nameplate this year is the first Mustang that would be available in right hand drive configuration.

Ford hasn't yet presented the RHD Mustang in public but has announced that sales in markets like the UK and Australia will commence in 2015. Interestingly, Ford has officially confirmed that the unmistakable American sportscar will also be launched in the neighbouring country of Sri Lanka next year.

The sixth-generation Ford Mustang is the first model to be available in RHD configuration.

David Westerman, managing director, Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor Company, said "we can’t wait to launch this iconic vehicle in Sri Lanka."

The sixth generation Mustang's exterior design is an evolution of the car it replaced but the dimensions are significantly different. The interior too is a progress in the same direction.

Engine options include an entry level 3.7-litre V6 petrol which dishes out 300 hp and 365 Nm of torque and a top end 5.0-litre V8 petrol motor generating 420 hp and 528 Nm of torque that powers the GT variant. The mid-level 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo petrol motor is good enough for 305 hp and 406 Nm of torque. The engines will be mated either to a 6-speed  manual or automatic transmission.

India's one world's largest RHD markets, and the Mustang could find many homes here.

Talking to Indian Autos Blog in April, Nigel Harris, Ford India's newly appointed President and Managing Director, sounded positive about bringing the Mustang to India as a halo product for the Blue Oval.

Harris did not confirm the launch, but with 17.86 lakh passenger cars sold in FY14, India is one of the world's largest RHD markets with a growing appetite for premium cars, which is reason enough for Ford to bring the Mustang into our shores.
