Maruti Suzuki is planning to add a petrol variant of the Vitara Brezza to its lineup. The launch of the Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol could unfold by the end of 2017 or at the 2018 Auto Expo on February 9. Scroll down for info on the upcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol launch, price and specifications.
Launched in March 2016, the compact SUV became a runaway success for MSIL selling 50,000 units in just seven months. In May 2017, it registered its highest ever monthly sales figure of 12,375 units and the cumulative sales of the compact SUV stood at 1.45 lakhs as of July 2017. Maruti Suzuki has managed to achieve these stellar numbers without the presence of petrol or automatic variants. However, we are given to understand, Maruti evaluating a petrol engine variant of the Brezza in a bid to appeal to a wider audience.
Model Name | Launch Date (expected) |
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Petrol | End 2017 or Auto Expo 2018 |
Despite having been on sale for more than a year, MSIL continues to struggle to cope with the demand for the Vitara Brezza. Even now, some dealerships are reporting a waiting period of anywhere between 5 and 6 months. Our guess is that Maruti will launch the petrol variant once they are able to ramp up production and clear the existing backlog. Right now, an Auto Expo 2018 launch seems likely.
Variant | Ex-Showroom Price (Estimated) |
Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol LXi | Rs. 6.80 lakh |
Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol VXi | Rs. 7.20 lakh |
Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol ZXi | Rs. 8.20 lakh |
Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol ZXi+ | Rs. 9.00 lakh |
The upcoming petrol variants of the Vitara Brezza will be cheaper than the corresponding diesel trims. However, the price difference could be only INR 20,000-40,000. There are three possibilities when it comes to the engine that will power the Brezza – 1.0 L Boosterjet, 1.5 L M15A or 1.4 L K14B. The former will have to be imported thereby pushing costs up. While the other two will attract a significantly higher tax of 43%, as opposed to 23% if the capacity is less than 1200 cc, under the current GST structure.
Competition Check
Rivals of the Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol include –
Vitara Brezza Petrol Specifications (expected) | |
Engine | 1.0 L Boosterjet Petrol |
Power | 75 kW |
Torque | 150 Nm |
Transmission | 5-speed Manual |
Estimated Mileage | 20-21 KMPL |
There are several candidates that could find their way into the engine bay of the Brezza. The most probable is the 1.0 L Boosterjet that powers the Baleno RS. According to reports, the manufacturer feels this particular engine has kind of torque that will suit an SUV. It will also make the Vitara Brezza Petrol a direct rival to the Ford EcoSport EcoBoost, which comes with a 1.0 L Turbocharged engine as well. However, currently, this engine is imported to India, which will push costs up.
The other options include a 1.4 L K14B Petrol that powers the Ciaz and Ertiga or a 1.5 L M15A Petrol that is rumoured to power the upcoming Ciaz facelift and S-Cross facelift. This engine may be manufactured locally, but their use will mean the Vitara Brezza Petrol attracts 43% tax under the current GST structure, as opposed to 23% it will attract if the 1.0 L engine is used. Transmission duties are expected to be handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox.
