LML (Lohia Machinery Limited), a long forgotten two wheeler maker who is famous for the LML Vespa scooter before the millennium is staging a comeback.
After parting ways with Piaggio Vespa, the Kanpur based firm hadn't had a single success with its range of motorcycles that include the LML Adreno and the Freedom 110cc commuter. People can't even recall the names of the rest of the LML bikes!
However, LML is plotting a new product onslaught. The two wheeler maker is planning to relaunch the Freedom besides coming up with a new four stroke engine with automatic drive for the Star which is described as a "man's scooter". LML still exports the Star to countries like Italy!
Mr. Partha Sen Chowdhury, head of sales and marketing at LML said, "We are also planning to come up with 125cc and 150cc motorbikes, apart from the 125cc Unisex scooters and 150cc and above lifestyle scooters."
The 150cc scooters which form a niche segment looks promising and currently there is no single player catering to that niche. If LML could offer a good product in time, it could leverage the first mover's advantage. As far as the commuter segment goes, the new Freedom would be having a tough time competing with a plethora of well settled motorcycles like the Hero Splendor, Bajaj Discover 100T, Honda Dream Yuga, etc.
The Freedom and the Star will be available through 70 outlets in Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh by mid-May while the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra will be getting the products in three months' time.
Good thing is, LML's renewed operations would provide additional choices and varieties to the two wheeler buyers.
