The D2 Segment SUV that went on sale in September 2011 became Mahindra’s first vehicle to utilize a monocoque chassis. In May 2015, it got its first cosmetic upgrade along with the introduction of new features. As of July 2016, Mahindra had sold over 1.5 lakh units of the XUV500 in India. It is also the fastest Indian car to reach 50,000 units, a feat it achieved within 16 months of its launch. The SUV is also exported to multiple markets around the globe including South Africa, Australia, Chile, Italy and New Zealand. Over the years, Mahindra has showcased concepts based on the XUV500 that could make it to production in the future including XUV500 Diesel Hybrid at the 2014 Auto Expo and XUV Aero Concept at the 2016 Auto Expo.

Power | 170 BHP |
Torque | 350-360 Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed Manual or 6-speed Automatic |
Estimated Mileage | 14-16 KMPL |
Based on recent media reports, Mahindra will retune the current 2179 cc mHawk diesel to increase the power output to around 170 BHP along with an increment in torque output. This may be a consequence of the fact that its chief rival, Tata Hexa, which also gets a 2.2 L unit, makes more power and torque, as does the upcoming Jeep Compass. As for the transmission options, the 6-speed manual and the Aisin sourced 6-speed automatic will continue. To get around the now revoked ban on registration of diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of 2000 cc or higher, Mahindra launched the XUV500 with a 1.99 L mHawk diesel with the same specifications as the 2.2 L unit in March 2016. Now that the ban is no longer in effect, and Mahindra may eventually discontinue these variants.

2.2 L mHawk Diesel Manual | 15-16 KMPL |
2.2 L mHawk Diesel Automatic | 13-14 KMPL |
Fuel efficiency figures might take a hit as the XUV500 will make more power and torque. However, the effect of that might not be significant. According to a report that surfaced in January 2017, Mahindra is looking to introduce their ‘Intelli-Hybrid’ mild hybrid technology on the XUV500. However, under the new GST regime, hybrids attract the highest tax of 43% (28%+15%) which has discouraged the company to invest or rollout the technology for India.
We are yet to spot test mules of the upcoming new model Mahindra XUV500 so, it is difficult to comment on the extent of cosmetic updates. There could be a new Imperio-like toothed grille on offer along with revised front and rear bumpers. It may also get new tail lamp graphics and new 17-inch alloy wheels. Expect much of the ‘Cheetah Inspired’ exterior to carry on unchanged. The cabin of the XUV500 could gain new upholstery and changes to the instrument console. Mahindra updated the infotainment system in April 2017 adding features like Android Auto, EcoSense, and Connected Apps, which may not see further changes. The new XUV500 might come with dual tone paint schemes and new paint shades.

Based on the latest report from June 2017, the torque output will go up to around 350-360 Nm along with a 30 HP jump in power. Mahindra has confirmed the introduction of petrol variants of the XUV500 and is said to have invested around INR 1000 crore towards the development of a new family of petrol motors for launch this fiscal year.
