Previewed as the Carlino design study at Auto Expo 2016.
In an interview with The Hans India, Y K Koo, MD & CEO of Hyundai Motor India, has stated that the company is expecting to launch a ‘small’ SUV in 2018-2019.
Hyundai’s small SUV will pack a 1.0-liter T-GDI petrol engine when it enters production. A small displacement diesel engine could also be introduced. Apparently, 60 percent of the small SUV’s development will be carried out by Hyundai India’s R&D team. At the moment, technical details on the production-spec Carlino are scarce.
The Carlino design study concept from the Auto Expo 2016 featured squarish taillights, large rugged wheels, suicide doors, front and rear skid plates, roof carriers, side air intakes, and sleek headlights with LED daytime running lights.
The Carlino will rival the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the yet-to-launch Tata Nexon. With the Carlino, Hyundai will have a strong SUV lineup comprising of the Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Santa Fe.
