The Maruti Suzuki Ritz Petrol preferred over the diesel one, reports have revealed. According to the dealers only 30% of the Ritz sold till now are the diesel 1.3 ltr and the rest are 1.2 ltr petrol versions.
Generally in this particular segment the sales of the diesel variant is more than the petrol due to a host of reasons, but in the case of the Ritz, it is different.
If we look at the Suzuki Swift sales, the petrol and diesel models are evenly split and sometimes the diesel sales are more then that of the petrol.
Some of the possible reasons for this shift are
- The petrol Ritz is significantly cheaper then the diesel. The difference between the prize of Ritz petrol base model ( LXi ) and Ritz diesel base model ( LDi ) is around Rs.83,000.
- As compared to Swift petrol and diesel models this difference is only Rs.67,000.
- Another probable reason is the Ritz petrol is powered by the new generation KB engine which provides refined performance and better fuel economy.
- Also the Ritz petrol, as it is new, should slightly return better numbers then the Swift petrol.

Petrol models becoming more popular is the new trend which depicts that the Indian customer is educated in selecting cars and don’t look for only low running costs.
The new entrants like the Volkswagen and others should keep that in mind.

I have been owing the ritz vxi for 2 months now and done 1800 Kms (around 500 Kms on highway), the car is a beauty , excellent handling … extremely stable at high speeds … clocked 130 Kmph on the highway frm Hyd to sagar highway (undivided & with lots of bends and curves )
mileage on Highway – 16 Km/litre (with ac)
In city the initial mileage was around 11 but it has improved to around 13 currently with ac on all the time.
ritz is a good car but the shape is putting off a lot of prospective buyer’s.Also the boot is far too small
Ritz is very smooth to drive and comfortable. In highways the mileage is good. But in city,the mileage is very short it seems.Can any body substantiate.
At bangalore Ritz is not selling as is A star Dealers are misleading and even diesla are available ex stock but due to salesman ship at suzuki showrooms customers are fooled to belive
The majority of Petrol car buyers {Ritz in this case] have minimal running. Sort of people who need a car for only home to office and back trips, may be an occasional journey rarely over 20 km. So why pay a premium for the diesel when u do not have the mileage per day?? People understand this and those who do not, are convinced by auto sales men [for a faster sale, to get rid of inventory at showrooms etc] who talk sense into aspiring diesel car owners who do not have heavy usage.
The extra that one need to pay for a diesel engined Ritz can easily pay for about 15000 kms worth of fuel for a petrol car owner. as the Vxi is cheaper by Rs.40,000/-, cheaper than the cheapest diesel that is an Ldi which means for a lesser ownership cost the buyer enjoys better trim levels inside the car.
Most of these car buyers may also have petrol costs covered in their employment benefit/tax savings schemes in terms of conveyance etc, hence cost of running may not be important.
The clutter of the diesel engine is also done away with. Also that most women prefer petrol cars, not to mention the design of the Ritz could appeal more to the female buyer, and hence at least influence a car purchase in a household.
And the fact that the petrol engined cars are mostly available off the shelf ,while diesels have a small waiting period [one month for the Ritz, I was told at Pratham Motors Bangalore] could also mean that janata could opt for the readily available pertol cars for immediate delivery at the dealer point.
