The BMW X7 range will include three petrol and three diesel engine models. xDrive30i, xDrive40i and xDrive50i are the petrol engine models and xDrive30d, xDrive40d and xDrive50d are the diesel engine models. The company apparently plans to offer the large SUV only with six-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive. All engine models will likely have an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. An iPerformance plug-in hybrid variant should follow a couple months after the launch.

Like the BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW X3, the BMW X7 will utilise the CLAR platform. Considering its size class and the segment, it's logical to expect BMW to use carbon-fibre in the body as a weight reduction measure that will positively influence efficiency and better handling.

BMW will make the X7 at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. The company will showcase the future model in concept form at the IAA 2017 next month. Knudt Flor, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Co, has confirmed that the production will commence in late 2018. The sales launch could take place towards the end of 2018 or in early 2019.
