Expected to be shown next year
Just months after the BMW Concept X2 made its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, BMW has started testing its production version (codename: BMW F49) with lower camouflage. Spy shots of the production 2018 BMW X2 published by autoevolution give the first look at the future coupe-styled compact SUV.
The BMW X2 will be the third Sports Activity Coupe after the BMW X6 and BMW X4 in the company's crossovers/SUV series. Positioned between the BMW X1 and BMW X3, it will compete with the Range Rover Evoque when it hits the market late next year or in early 2018. Like the concept, the test mule also has a notably tapered roofline and a bulbous rear-end.
The BMW X2's roofline lowers in a very subtle manner. There's a big tailgate spoiler and a steeply raked back glass, giving it the impression of a hatchback. The unique styling is set to not polarize opinion, as the BMW X6 did.

Underpinning the BMW X2 will be the UKL front-wheel drive platform BMW shares with MINI. While 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines will be the staple, Europe and China could get the 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine options. 6-speed automatic and 8-speed Steptronic automatic should pair with the engines, with the xDrive all-wheel drive system coming on higher models.
