India-made Suzuki Baleno, Suzuki Ignis nominated for WCOTY 2017

India is the production hub for both models.

Suzuki has announced that the India-made Suzuki Baleno hatchback and Ignis crossover have been nominated for the 2017 World Car of the Year award in the new ‘Urban Car’ category.

The Baleno and Ignis contend with six other cars from different manufacturers in the Urban Car category.

To contend for the award in the Urban Car category, the vehicle must be less than 4m long, designed as a daily driver in an urban environment and on sale in two continents by Spring 2017. The Baleno and Ignis measure 3.99 meters and 3.70 meters, respectively. The hatchback is sold in Asian and European markets, while the crossover is on sale in Japan and will be launched in other markets across the world, including India, next year.

The World Car of the Year judging panel comprises of 73 Automotive Industry journalists with eight of these representing the UK and Republic of Ireland. The Baleno and Ignis contend with six other cars from different manufacturers.

The Suzuki Ignis will be launched in other markets across the world before next Spring.

India is the production hub for the both the Maruti Baleno and Ignis. The former is already being manufactured and exported from Maruti Suzuki's plants in Manesar and Gurgaon, while the latter will enter production at Maruti's new facility in Gujarat and exported from January 2017.
