The global market launch of the 2016 Fortuner took place in July this year in Thailand. Since, the Hilux-based second generation SUV has gone on sale in Thailand and Australia, and is expected to launch in South American markets next.

Based on the new ladder-frame platform, the 2016 Fortuner measures 4,795 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, 1,835 mm in height and 2,750 mm in wheelbase. While the wheelbase is identical to the older Fortuner, the overall length has increased by 90 mm, the width by 15 mm while the overall height has come down by 15 mm.

The 2016 Fortuner is available with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Toyota also replaced the 2.5- and 3.0-liter KD diesel engines of the Fortuner with the new 2.4- and 2.8-liter downsized engines from the brand new GD engine family. Despite the downsize, the new GD series engines are more powerful and torque-ier than the outgoing KD series engines.

The 2.4-liter engine develops 150 PS and 400 Nm of torque, whereas the 2.8-liter unit packs 177 PS and 450 Nm of torque. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
