Maruti to launch 20 new models in the next 5 years - Report

Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) outlined its mid-term plan on Tuesday, stating that it aims to sell 3.4 million vehicles globally by 2020. Maruti-Suzuki, SMC's largest operation, is expected to sell 2 million units/annum by 2020, contributing to 58 percent of overall volumes.

Products like the S-Cross see Maruti enter the highly-lucrative crossover segment.

Currently, Maruti contributes to 43 percent of SMC's volumes, and accounts for 30 percent of consolidated profits. Maruti also holds on to the highest 45 percent market share in India, and this is expected to continue if the brand aims at selling 2 million units/annum (considering that passenger vehicle sales in India is expected to be 5 million units/annum in 2020).

The company will be launching 20 new models, including full model changes of existing vehicles and entering all-new segments in order to boost its overall volumes. Products like the Maruti S-Cross (expected to launch in the coming weeks), YRA premium hatchback (H2 2015), YBA sub-4 meter SUV (H1 2016) and YJC Wagon-R based MPV see Maruti exploring new segments.

Maruti's new products would also be joined by new technologies, such as hybrid drivetrain, turbocharged petrol engine and new diesel engines.

On the other hand, volume-spinning models such as the Swift, Swift Dzire, Alto 800 and Ertiga would have moved to the next generation models within the next 5 years. Maruti is also reported to be working on a new premium MPV that will be positioned above the Ertiga.
