UPDATE – The Maruti Suzuki Ritz has been launched. Click here to read the full story.

Few days back, you might have read from the Updates in the sidebar that Maruti Ritz is to be launched on the 15th of May. What you might not have heard is the fact that Maruti officials are going around announcing that Maruti Ritz’ main rival is the Maruti Swift. How uncool is that? Let’s hear what Maruti Suzuki MD Shinzo Nakanishi had to say

Ritz will directly compete with Swift. In the past, when we have launched cars in the same segment, it has helped the market to grow. With the launch of Ritz, our customers would have two cars to choose from in the same category”

Just to remind you, WagonR and Zen Estilo are two Marutis competing in the same small car segment. Mind you though, the Wagon R was facelifted when the Esilo came out. Apparently, the idea was to create a spectre of two new cars being launched.

In Swift’s case however, no major facelifts have been done since 2004, and by seeing the number of Swifts on the road (75% in the compact car segment), i would’nt be surprised if someone says he/she has gotten ‘BORED’ of the Swift!

The Ritz on the other hand, has the advantage of being new fresh looks, new interiors, the lot… It has a very potent BS IV ready 1.2L K12M engine, that is lower on consumption and emissions than the Swift’s 1.3L counterpart. But most importantly, i sense that it will be priced marginally lesser than the Swift, which will give it the cost advantage.

The Swift is a good car, no doubt, but due to its commonness, i think it has aged too soon. Only a facelift can help, in order to stand up against the Ritz….or am i wrong?

I feel that Maruti Suzuki Swift might start losing ground from May 15th. Please share your thoughts.

I owned a Ritz Vxi.I have already driven 1400 KMs. I feel that it is a very good car. No sound .very silent .Mileage is near about 19 Kms/Ltr.I think Ajay kohli telling lies about the car with hidden agendas. In Kerala Rits is a good performer.

  7. harish says:

ritz had excellent features compared with any other in its segment.ritz Car seems good, i have also seen them on road in Europe. This car displays elegance and compactness with the reliable Motor making it a good Diesel Competitor for Indian market..

  15. Dexter says:

Hi Siddharath, it seems you are in the same confusion i was going through last month. Swift D is a good car, no doubt!, but Ritz is new in the market from the same maker, with same engine, better tuned to the latest trend, which makes Ritz D better!!

  16. siddharath says:

i am very confused in Swift Disel& RITZ disel ,which i have to buy and why?

  17. Dexter says:

I’m actually planning to buy a new diesel car and having Swift & Ritz eyed. From the research/test drives I made, Ritz is a much better option in terms of boot space, leg room, head room, design. In fact its new on the market with 1.3L engine CRDI(similar to Swift) and comes with BS IV standard. I know the rear of ritz makes to think twice, but swift had the same issue when launched in 2005. In my opinion, ritz is VFM in B+ segment and I’d recommend it to my friends. Thanks, Dexter

  20. abhi says:

I V Rao is not the MD of maruti suzuki.. its Shinzo Nakanishi

  21. AJAY KOHLI says:

I am a loyal customer of your brand since 1994. My first car was Maruti 800, after that I purchased Maruti Alto, and then was Esteem and now I am using your Maruti RITZ. Frankly speaking I had a very bad experience since the day I bought the car, It seems that Maruti has Launched RITZ without road test.

Problems I’m facing since the day I bought this car from “Magic Auto Dwarka, Delhi”:

    1. Continuous noise from the Right door pillar, which is quite irritating while driving.
    2. While driving on the highway at a speed of 75-85 Kmph / 2100 rpm, I noticed continuous jerks and vibrations which shakes the whole body and causes a lot of discomfort and headache while driving. These vibrations stop when the care touches the speed of 90Kmph or above, (Usually this much speed is not possible in the city).
    3. Car A/C makes lot of noise when it starts in the morning or after long gap during the day time.

    Problems occurred afterward

    1. After 2000 kms. all Doors and plastic moulds inside have started making noises (Doors trims, dash board, under body noise etc). The whole car seems to be like a rattle with different kinds of sounds coming from different sides.
    2. Wipers sometimes are not smooth and makes ’creaky” sound.
    3. In Power window switch assembly, button for “Left Rear window” does not work properly (spring stuck up).

Overall not a smooth and satisfactory driving rather it is very stressful as I drive more than 125Kms a day

I have shown the problems to DD Motors twice but even they were not able to trace the fault and do anything. I was assured that an engineer from Maruti, who had been informed telephonically by DD Motors, will come to address to my problems. Till date, neither I got any response from the assigned engineer nor from DD Motors. Now, how long should I wait for second service, as rectification was assured before the second service?

My question is “Will Maruti ever become serious towards customer’s problems and technical faults reported by them or will be busy in mass production and Launches only?”

  22. vysak says:

its a mere try by the maruthi guys to make their own engine 4 their car-ritz,as fiat did it 4 swift…no other option than waitin to know abot the performance of the car….ofcourse ritz will surely hit the market and may give some trouble 4 the swift,nd mak a dilemma 4 guys looking to buy the swift…
anyway its ultimately good 4 maruthi that they provide with more options than the others…

  23. Nishanth says:

I think the looks of Ritz (Splash) is on an uglier side when compared to Swift. The back looks awkward and weird.
I am waiting for the Honda Jazz… it looks like the old Civic hatchback. The old Civic hatchback was a priceless piece, hopefully Jazz will live up to the Honda expectation.

  24. [...] we look at the Suzuki Swift sales, the petrol and diesel models are evenly split and sometimes the diesel sales are more then [...]

  25. SAHAJ says:

no1 can actually beat the compact powehouse the swift…

  26. om says:

Has anyone booked a petrol ritz in mumbai, what is the dealer saying when is the delivery expected any idea.

  27. [...] driving pleasure (If you are in need of some confusion trouble-free, economical car you can try choosing between the Ritz and the Swift in the Maruti [...]

  28. Jaz says:

@ Sanjay – Thank you for that comment. As we’ve not had the time or the opportunity to drive the Ritz, we know little about its interiors. But you have made some valid points there. I think the confusion will continue for a long time, no doubt

  29. sanjay says:

dear Seree you must have not seen the qaulity of the material used in Ritz its so cheap its cheaper than the Nano, even Nano has decent interiors and more over the cushioning of the Ritz seats is the worst i have ever seen in any car,u need to sit on them to know the diffrence, they have only done that they have split the seat to 60:40 thats it and nothing else do they think customer today is such a fool that he will not compare it with swift when the price diffrence is not much between them.but still if someone wants to buy such a lousy car best of luck to him.

  30. seree says:

hi everyone,eh ehhh fed up by reading someones comments(not mentioned).ok let me start
if your comparing ritz and the swift, you will be confused both are equally vfm package.but in the looks swift is cool and it can be also madified, but rits doesn’t.
one more thing the swift is very much fun to drive, qiuck(diesel).
the swift popular all over the world even in middle east, europe, austalia, swift is also coming in america
    but ritz doesn’t.
But ritz has got nicer interiors, and is more refined and comfortable and spacious than the swift.

these are my piont my friends.

    thank you

  31. sanjay says:

i had waited for th ritz to arrive so as to decide between the ritz and swift, but my wait was waste the interior of the ritz is very poor u name it the dashboard looks very odd,the quality of the seat is very poor, overall the interior are very very poor as compared to the swift, any one before u decide on the ritz think twice because the price u are paying for th ritz is it really worth because with just 10000 rupees more u can go for swift, with a better interior, and more power.Forget about the mileage in city like mumbai u are not going to get the average what the company says for the ritz.Best of luck all those who for the ritz it looks are worst than the Nano.

  32. Jaz says:

@Vineet- Yes, it looks much better than the 5 year old Swift. Yes, the large glass house will make it a better city car compared to the Swift.

@Deepak – Thank you for the information. Engine swap is expected, as you said.

Lalit Taneja – the engines will be tuned accordingly. Nothing else changes except the ECU tweaking. Go for the Ritz..I think everyone will recommend that.

  33. Vineet says:

Got to see teh Ritz in showroom today. It definetly looks far better than the swift. Smaller than swift from outside, but more spacious in the inside probably because the bonnet is very compact. Higher seating position and large wind screen give almost a panoramic view of the outside. Waiting to get a test drive.

  34. Deepak says:

  36. Lalit Taneja says:

I was planning to buy swift VDI but only available in premium then came to know about Ritz so now waiting but some one told me that Fiat Engine is swift is the best engine though Ritz also getting multijet engine but that of maruti own which is not too good. what one recommend for engine…

  37. Nayak says:

Maruti Swift luks dam good than RITZ, A Star ….. i believe its completely two segment Small Car Segment like RITZ & Mid Size Car Segment for Families i.e Swift

  38. Jaz says:

@Sushil- Awesome observation. Civic, Scorpio A/T are on the rise.

But do you think an A/T transmission can be fitted to a Splash/Swift and the cost could still be under 5.0 lakh rupees? Wouldn’t it go near 6 lakhs if you couple an A/T in one of those cars? How many people would buy them then? I mean, the market for such cars is minimum and a hatch buyer is always bothered about gas mileage, and everyone has this notion that A/T drinks fuel and is less fuel efficient than a manual box.

There should be a revelation before A/T enter the hatchback segment. The i10 and Santro have A/T versions but how many of them do you see on the road?

  39. Sushil says:

What I meant was to make sure the sales is sustained Maruti will find a way to bring in more features without increasing the price of the Swift too much. Case in point the latest ZXI has the steering mounted controls and in dash music system – a cool feature addition without too much extra cost. I couldnyt think of anything else missing on the Swift ZXI.
I still think Maruti is making a mistake if they say there is no market for automatics – if they price it right am sure there will be a lot of buyers from crowded cities.
Am already seeing automatic Scorpios and Civics & cities increasing here in Chennai.

  40. Jaz says:

@Sushil- Yes, as it is a new car people will buy it no doubt. But then on the long run, it could eat the Swift sales. I don’t think A/T and Cruise control will ever be added as it could elevate the cost to place the car out of that segment. Maruti should probably offer the Ritz in petrol only and then maybe they can clearly differentiate the Swift and the Ritz.

  41. Sushil says:

On other magazines and forums it is being mentioned that the Ritz will appeal to people with families while the Swift will appeal to the younger and possibly single buyers.
    My thoughts:
I think the Swift right now is loaded to the gills with features and the Ritz is slightly less feature laden. I think things like the Airbags, Steering audio controls, climate control etc may be the differentiator for the Swift to justify its existince. I predict more feature additions to happen to the Swift to retain its position (Cruise control still is missing on the Swift – and an Automatic transmission- these may come out soon – I hope).
The Ritz will sell well because it is firstly new, has overall good looks (except the rear),is good VFM, has good mileage , it is a Maruti, due to its ease of maintenance and good resale value. The Swift sold well for almost the same reasons !

  42. Jaz says:

@Deepak – Thank you for that information. But will it cannibalize Swift sales? That’s the big question.

  43. Deepak says:

Ritz will launch its 6 varients on 15 may
    diesel and petrol

  44. Dave says:

    @ Ganesh

The same 1.3L MultiJet engine that already serves the Diesel Swift and Dzire will be used in the Ritz Diesel. I hope you can imagine the plight of Maruti’s diesel engine plant when the Ritz diesel is launched :-)

Diesel Ritz is definitely on the cards, but one will have to wait for Maruti to optimize the engine plant and make further announcements.

  45. Ganesh says:

Hey Guys ,any ideas as to when the deisel ritz would come , that would b the killer blow.

  46. Amith says:

I too agree that the swift will lose some market shares. But, if the ritz is competing with the swift, i feel that it would be a better and fair competition if the swift was slightly face-lifted.As far as the looks are concerned i feel that youngsters might still go for the swift.Let’s wait and see!

  47. Car Blog says:

I don’t think many Swift owners will take to the Ritz easily. The Swift looks pretty good, the Ritz well looks quite weird at the rear. Overall its win-win for Maruti.

  48. Jaz says:

I don’t know how the Ritz is going to be positioned. I always thought the Swift was targeted at youngsters, and now the Splash also looks trendy and hep. Will it cannibalize the sales of the Swift? Absolutely. How much of it? Guess we’ll have to wait till the 15th to find out :)

  49. Riqwan says:

Yes.. definitely the Swift will loose some or even most amounts of its sales to the Splash. But each car has its own attributes for it to sell. Like.. the exteriors of the Swift will be mostly preferred compared to the Splash and the interiors of the Ritz will be mostly preferred compared to the Swift. The Ritz also has the “recently launched” tag on it and the new engine. So there will be considerable amount of sales of the Ritz in the first few months.. tho.. there might be a reasonable amount of Swifts selling.

  50. Dave says:

If a Maruti Ritz owner and a Maruti Swift owner meet, who’s going to feel inferior?
