The world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, is now eying the title of ‘world’s cheapest hybrid.’ Tata Motors is considering a micro-hybrid version of the Tata Nano with Start-Stop Technology that allows the vehicle to reduce fuel consumption by 5% and cut emissions by up to 10%. The micro hybrid is not new to auto buffs in India as we are fully aware of the micro hybrid Mahindra Bolero and Scorpio which will be launched later this year.
Bosch Start-Stop Technology reduces fuel consumption by 5%
Recent news reports suggest that, Bosch will provide the micro-hybrid technology to Tata. This system would allow the engine to automatically turn off when the vehicle is stationary (at traffic signals). The engine starts up, once movement is required.
This technology may add another Rs. 4000 to Rs. 6000 to the overall cost but this is definitely the most cost effective option suitable for the world’s cheapest car.
Micro-hybrid technology will make Tata Nano Rs.4,000-6,000 costlier
In the wake of stricter fuel consumption and emission norms, this micro-hybrid technology can be employed in regular vehicles at a much lower cost than full hybrid systems. The micro-hybrid technology will also be available on the Tata Nano diesel and in the electric variant.
IAB Comment- There won’t be a massive leap in fuel efficiency, but expect considerable gains. Added benefit is lesser emissions, as the engine won’t run when not needed. This might be the big daddy of all green cars in the world very soon.
