BMW has unveiled the first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupé. This should be the model reaching the markets not getting the 1 Series Sedan, likely including India.

BMW says that the 2 Series Gran Coupé has been developed with a prime focus on its driving dynamics. It's the fourth model in the 2 Series range that includes even a 2-door coupé, a 2-door convertible and an MPV. It is based on a completely different platform, though. It uses the same FAAR architecture, also seen on the recently launched 1 Series, and unlike the 2-door models, is a front-wheel drive.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé measures 4,526 mm in length, 1,800 mm width and 1420 in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,670 mm wheelbase. In the European markets, it will be initially seen in three engine variants including the 218i, the 220d and the M235i xDrive. The 218i comes with a 140PS/220Nm, 1.5-litre single-turbo petrol unit, the 220d employs a 190PS/400Nm, 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel unit and the top-of-the-line M235i xDrive has a 306 PS/450 Nm 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol unit. The entry-level 218i features a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox, while the remaining variants feature an 8-speed automatic 'box as standard. India could get the 218i and the 220d engine variants at launch.

On the outside, it gets BMW’s signature kidney grille which appears to be wider than the one featured on the 1 Series. The grille features horizontal slats on lower-end variants, and the top-spec M235i gets a mesh grille. Other exterior differences among the variants include enlarged air inlet surrounds and bespoke rectangular exhausts at the rear of the M235i. On the sides, it is offered with 16-, 19-inch wheel options and comes sculpted with a muscular looking shoulder line.

On the inside, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé features an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a 9.2-inch head-up display. The driver and passenger screens are split using differing materials used on the dashboard. The company claims that it offers an extra 33 mm of knee room in comparison to the 2 Series Coupe.
