The 5 Series will be locally assembled at BMW’s plant in Chennai, and launch in three variants: 530i, 520d and 530d M-Sport.

The new 5-er is 4,935 mm long, 1,868 mm wide and 1,466 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,975 mm. The styling draws heavy inspiration from its bigger brother, the BMW 7 Series, also borrowing the new CLAR RWD platform, which has helped shave up to 100 kg off the kerb weight. The top-end 530d M-Sport will have a sporty body kit with larger rims, and Head-up Display, fully digital instrument cluster, iDrive 6.0 with touch and air gesture support, automatic LED headlamps, 4-zone climate control, rear seat entertainment and BMW Display Key with Remote Park Control.

The 530i will be the base variant, which packs a 2.0L 4-cyl turbocharged engine producing 252 hp, and will be the sole petrol option at launch. The 520d has a 2.0L 4-cyl turbodiesel engine with 190 hp, while the range-topping 530d gets the 3.0l turbodiesel 6-cyl motor with 256 hp.

An 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox and steering-mounted paddle shifters are standard, and power is sent to the rear wheels. With the lighter kerb weight and refinements made to the powertrain, expect the new 5-er to be more fuel efficient than the outgoing model’s 18.5 km/L (520d) and 14.7 km/L (530d).

Prices are estimated to range between INR 52 Lakhs – 65 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
