Speaking to IndianAutosBlog at the media preview of the Maruti Ignis, CV Raman, Executive Director (Engg) at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, has confirmed that the Ignis will not get an SHVS mild-hybrid system, putting an end to rumours of SHVS being equipped in both petrol and diesel models.

CV Raman, Head of Maruti's R&D division has confirmed that the Ignis will not get an SHVS mild-hybrid system.

According to Raman, the company would like to first educate customers on how the SHVS mild-hybrid system functions, collect feedback from said customers and decide whether it's worth localising the components and democratise it across Maruti's portfolio. Currently, Maruti offers the SHVS system in Ciaz and Ertiga, the components of which are imported.

In a previous instance, Mr Raman had told IAB that there was no urgent need of SHVS tech in compact cars, given that most Maruti products already offer best-in-class fuel efficiency and are complying with current emission norms. However, he believes that hybridisation is the way forward for Maruti products in the future, once the government introduces BSVI emission norms in 2020 and as the fuel-efficiency numbers game gets increasingly competitive.

Overseas, Suzuki offers the SHVS in the Ignis and Baleno, and feels that it could be launched if the demand is felt in India.
