A bulk of the total demand for the Baleno is for the 1.2 petrol variant, comprising close to 70 percent of the total sales.

Apparently, a bulk of the demand for the Baleno is for the 1.2 petrol variant, comprising close to 70 percent of the total sales. The reasons for this shift could be the lower on-road price of the petrol variant, narrow gap between prices of petrol and diesel fuels as well as the uncertainty about diesel-powered cars in the country.

Since the start of the new financial year, Maruti hasn't able to overtake its closest rival, the Hyundai i20 in the segment, despite receiving over 100,000 orders (the Baleno outsold the i20 in July 2016 though). This is attributed to the production at Maruti's Manesar plant, which is running at full capacity to fulfill the backlog of orders. A prospective customer will have to wait 6-7 months for their Baleno to arrive, which is deal-breaker for some. Once the new Sanand plant in Gujarat commences operation in early-2017, Maruti can clear backlogs at a faster rate.
