Will feature the SHVS hybrid system seen on the Ciaz.
Suzuki has finally revealed the highly anticipated 2016 Suzuki Baleno premium hatchback, albeit only the front end. The VW Golf-rival will make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show starting from September 15.
The Baleno is based on the Suzuki iK-2 concept that was showcased at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It is based on Suzuki’s new platform and has dimensions of 4023 mm, 1920 mm and 1450 mm in length, width and height respectively. The Baleno also gets a wheelbase of 2520 mm that should give it a spacious cabin and large storage capacity.
The premium hatch will be powered by a small 1.0-liter, direct-injection turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine that will also get the ‘Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki’ (SHVS) hybrid system already seen in the Maruti Ciaz diesel launched in India.
This system makes use of an integrated starter motor that aids the engine thus lessening fuel consumption. In a state when it’s not in use, the motor does the work of a generator by charging the battery through energy recuperation for use later on. Power figures have not yet been revealed, but the Baleno is expected to have high fuel efficiency and sprightly performance due to its light weight.
The Suzuki Baleno will go on sale next spring in Europe, but its Indian counterpart will launch later this year with a different name, reportedly. In the Indian market, the Maruti YRA (codename) will be the third model to be sold exclusively through Maruti's premium Nexa dealerships.
