First premium hatchback over 4 m in length.

India's most popular brand, Maruti Suzuki, is slowly establishing itself in higher segments with products like the Maruti Ertiga, Maruti Ciaz and the soon-to-be-launched S-Cross pseudo-crossover. Before the end of the year, the two will be joined by Maruti's new premium hatchback that is to be placed above the Swift - the Maruti YRA (codename).

Courtesy of Motoroids reader Mr. Umesh Ghai, spyshots of the Maruti YRA (or the Maruti Fronx, as it's rumored) have surfaced online, revealing a sparsely camouflaged prototype testing in Shimla. Previewed by the Suzuki iK-2 concept, the front-end of the Maruti YRA features a familiar design with the swept-back headlamps and lower fascia. However, what's new in the hatchback is the Renault-esque V-shaped grille, a broad shoulder line, and a discrete rear end design.

Previous spyshots have indicated that the interior of the Maruti YRA will be equipped with cruise control, keyless entry with a start/stop button, power folding mirrors and at least 2 airbags as standard, in addition to ABS with EBD. A 2-DIN audio system will be offered for lower trims, while higher variants get Maruti's SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment display.

Maruti could offer the YRA with engines more powerful to ones seen on the Swift.

Given that the Maruti YRA may not follow small car excise norms, and fits in above the Swift, Maruti isn't obliged to strap it with petrol and diesel engines with maximum displacement of 1.2-liters and 1.5-liters, respectively. So, it's likely that the Maruti YRA, at least optionally, will get the 1.4-liter K-Series engine from the Ertiga and Ciaz, which produces 91 hp and 130 Nm of torque in the latter models through a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The YRA will also get the 1.25-liter (1,242 cc) petrol engine, which makes 91 hp and 118 Nm of torque, and will be offered with a CVT gearbox. As for the diesel variant, the Maruti YRA will pack the tried-and-tested 1.3-liter DDiS (Fiat Multijet) engine paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
