The compact SUV in question is the vehicle codenamed ‘YBA’.
Maruti Suzuki confirmed its intentions to enter the compact SUV segment three years ago when it showcased the XA-Alpha concept at the 2012 Auto Expo. At the recent launch of the S-Cross crossover, the company also confirmed its plans to launch a compact SUV in this fiscal. The compact SUV in question is the vehicle codenamed ‘YBA’.
The YBA has already been caught testing a couple of times and looks to have been influenced more by the iV-4 concept (showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show), rather than the XA-Alpha. The front of the sub-4m compact SUV. judging by earlier spy photos, gets a sleek chrome grille with angular headlamps and a clamshell bonnet. A tailgate-mounted spare wheel is also anticipated, though it is not seen in the spy shots. The overall shape exudes muscularity, resembling that of the Vitara SUV sold globally.
The YBA is, reportedly, based on the same platform as the Swift, and will be powered by a petrol and diesel engine. The gasoline unit is likely to be a 1.2-liter K-Series motor or a new 1.0-liter turbocharged ‘Boosterjet’ engine, while the diesel option is likely to pack the 1.3-liter DDiS (Fiat Multijet) engine.

The compact SUV is expected to play a vital role in Maruti’s goal of achieving sales of 2 million units by 2020. Once launched, it will rival the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Mahindra’s upcoming TUV300 compact SUV.
