Takes on the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux.
Fiat is currently working on a new pickup truck that is, reportedly, christened as the Fiat Toro. It will be sold in global markets where pick-up trucks are popular, and will compete against the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and the Mitsubishi L200/Triton.
A spyshot of the upcoming pick-up has surfaced, courtesy of a Carscoops reader, which reveals some elements of the model. It will draw design influence from the Fiat FCC4 Concept revealed at the 2014 Sao Paulo Auto Show, as seen in the sleek taillights and the shoulder line. The model spotted is of a four-door (double cab) variant, although we could expect single and space cab variants too.
If the Fiat pick-up prototype is a re-engineered Mitsubishi L200, since the company is, reportedly, on the verge of signing supply contract with Mitsubishi for their L200 pick-up trucks, it will keep the L200’s running gear, featuring a 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel offered in power ratings: a base version producing 152 hp and 380 Nm of torque, and a more powerful engine delivering 178 hp and 430 Nm of torque. If not, the Toro is expected to use a Fiat engine such as the 2.0L Multijet diesel and a 1.8 E.torQ EVO petrol.
This isn’t Fiat’s first pickup truck as the brand currently sells a front-wheel-drive-only Palio-based unibody Fiat Strada small pickup built in Brazil and sold in Latin America. The Toro will most likely arrive in showrooms in 2016.
