Suzuki's first diesel engine sets a benchmark in the fuel efficiency department.
Maruti-Suzuki will launch the Celerio diesel in New Delhi today, marking a new chapter in their diesel-engined passenger cars. The Celerio is the first product to feature the company's all-new 793 cc two-cylinder diesel engine, which has been under development for the past four years.
The 0.8-liter DDiS diesel engine develops 47 bhp and 125 Nm of torque, and is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. It returns an ARAI-tested fuel efficiency of 27.62 km/l, making the Celerio India's most fuel efficient diesel passenger vehicle.
The downsized diesel engine, which will be pitted against Hyundai's 1.1-liter U2 CRDi and the Chevrolet 1.0-liter XSDE, boasts of being the lightest in its class with a weight of only 89 kg. However, at 0.16 Nm/cc of displacement it has a higher torque/cc ratio than even the Maruti Swift diesel, pegged at 0.15 Nm/cc.
The Celerio diesel will launch in four variants - LDi, VDi, ZDi and ZDi (O) - similar to the Celerio petrol manual. The top-end variant benefits from dual front airbags, ABS, foglights, alloy wheels, a rear wiper and washer, Bluetooth-enabled music system with steering-mounted controls, electrically-adjustable wing mirrors and driver-seat height adjustment.
