Expected to premiere towards end-July in Thailand.
The forthcoming 2016 Toyota Fortuner was snapped on test along with an Isuzu MU-X (possibly a benchmark mule) on the roads of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Expected to be revealed in July this year, the second generation Fortuner brings a host of updates to the table.
Starting with the platform, the new Fortuner is bound to use the same chassis as the new Hilux Revo, which according to Toyota is 'brand new'. The new chassis is far more rigid and helps improving the overall safety of these utility vehicles. Further, it comes with Toyota's new FIRM (Frame with Integrated Rigidity Mechanism) technology to deliver better ride comfort.
Next up are the new diesel engines, part of the 'GD' engine family. A 2.4-liter with 150 hp and a 2.8-liter with 177 hp will come paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions with 2WD and 4WD capability. On the new Hilux Revo, these engines are announced to be 10 percent more efficient, and a similar figure can be expected for the 2016 Fortuner as well.

The exterior and interior design of the SUV will be revolutionary, the former having shown itself through leaked images. The interior is expected to be borrowed from the new Hilux, which looks less utilitarian and more car-like thanks to a Corolla-inspired interior.
The 2016 Fortuner is expected to launch in India in the next financial year.
