Reportedly delivers 30.1 kmpl.
Maruti's first in-house developed diesel engine - reportedly a 793cc twin-cylinder unit - has been spotted for the first time under the hood of the Maruti Celerio hatchback, by GaadiWaadi. The new diesel motor will be the smallest of its kind for a passenger car, under-displacing the 936cc Chevrolet Beat diesel.
The B-segment hatchback and the Ace-rivaling Maruti Y9T load carrier will be the first products to be powered by the new engine, with more models expected to follow.
The 793cc diesel motor will produce around 50 hp in the Celerio, and is claimed by Gaadiwaadi to return an impressive fuel efficiency of 30.1 kmpl. If it turns out to be true, the Maruti Celerio diesel will be the most fuel efficient car in the nation, taking away the title from stablemate Maruti Ciaz, which manages 26.2 km/l in the ARAI test.
To further attract customers, Maruti may consider fitting an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) to the Celerio diesel, which would make it the cheapest diesel AT in India. The Celerio petrol already has this tech.
