The compact sedan is based on the Vista's platform.

Based on the same platform as the Tata Vista, the Zest was Tata's first turnaround product, and went on sale in India in August 2014. The compact sedan rivals the likes of the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Maruti Dzire, all of which are on sale in Nepal through distributors.

In the Indian market, the Zest is available with a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.3-liter diesel engine. The latter is available with 5-speed manual and automated manual transmissions, while the former gets a Multi-Drive feature which allows the driver to alter the throttle map of the car.

The compact sedan is available in four variants in petrol, five variants in diesel and Tata also offers a base diesel variant in a 75 PS tune. Top-end variants are loaded with features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, alloy wheels, multifunction steering wheel with voice command, a touchscreen infotainment system, climate control and a multi-information display.
