Mahindra S101 shows off its car-like shape – Spied

Posted on: Jan 9, 2015 - 4:59pm IST

To be launched this year.

The Mahindra S101 was recently spotted by IAB reader Felix Jude near Chengalpet on the outskirts of Chennai. To be positioned against premium hatchbacks Maruti Swift and Hyundai Elite i20, the crossover would be the first such Mahindra in the market.

The S101 will rival premium hatchbacks and their cross versions.

And its proximity to the cars doesn’t just end there. It will feature a monocoque structure, a well proportioned body (as can seen from the spy pictures), and a range of newly developed 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and the possibility of an automated manual transmission.

Previous spyshots have also revealed a centre console mounted gear stick and a bench-type seat at the front. It will be the second Mahindra utility vehicle (after the XUV500) to have a monocoque structure, and is the smallest of them all.

It will be joined by the next gen Bolero, codenamed U301, in the line-up this year. Both compact SUVs have been undergoing testing in Tamil Nadu, and like the S101, the U301 has been regularly spotted by IAB readers.

Competitors: Ford EcoSport, Maruti XA Alpha, Tata Nexon, VW Taigun
Expected Price: INR 5-7 lakhs, ex-Showroom
Launch Date: 2015

No one will be interested in this after reading all that.

This vehicle was originally conceived and designed as a small people carrier without
much thought into safety and crash test rating. That is one of the reason you
will find center console mounted gear stick and a bench-type seat at the front.
Look for an extensive redesign of the interior or poor crash test rating on
this new vehicle. Knowing Mahindra, it may take them another two years before
they ship these to the showrooms. Classic example is Mojo, 299 cc bike that is running
around in tattered camo for the past 3 years with different Avatars.
