Both cars expected to reach markets next year.

BMW has been testing the next generation 5 Series (codenamed G30), and Mercedes has been doing so with the next generation E Class (codenamed W213) priming them for a launch in the next two years. AutoBild’s recent rendering of the two vehicles, serves as a preview.

Both the cars appear to be inspired by the flagship sedans of the respective brands.

Both vehicles look sharper than current versions, with Mercedes adopting a look that has hints of the S Class in it; and BMW opting for sleeker lights and a front end inspired by the upcoming 7 series.

Talking about the BMW, it will be based on ’35up’ platform, which will help the car lose close to 80 kg. The new Mercedes E-Class will be based on the MRA (Mercedes Rear-wheel drive Architecture), and is also expected to be lighter.

As for powerplants, adding to the current range of engines would be entry-spec 3-cylinder motor, while the range-topping M5 could get an engine as powerful as 600 hp, according to a previous report. While Mercedes will also offer the E63 AMG with the new 4-litre twin-turbo V8, the big news is the inclusion of the inline-six diesel engines replacing the current V6 units. Both cars will also get plug-in hybrid variants.

The report mentions that both cars will come in 2016: Mercedes E Class in early 2016 and BMW 5 Series in mid 2016, as previously stated. Their Indian arrival will be 6-8 months after international deliveries are on.
