The engine family is based on a modular architecture.

The new engine family which was developed from the scratch has four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The engines feature compact and lightweight aluminium blocks with equal cylinder spacing, bore, stroke and displacement (500 cc). This arrangement enables Jaguar to quickly develop derivatives by adding or subtracting the number of cylinders.

The engine block is made up of aluminium.

The use of aluminium is claimed to reduce the weight by 80 kg over comparable motors, says JLR. The modular design also allows the various members of the family to feature common internal parts and calibration techniques, thereby saving costs. The flexible engine architecture is compatible with front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations.

More derivatives are in the pipeline.

Under the hood of the Jaguar XE, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine is available in two states of tune – 163PS/380 Nm and 180PS/430 Nm. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is available in two output states – 200PS/280 Nm and 240PS/340 Nm. More variants will be spun-off in the future to power upcoming JLR products.

  1. Ram Mohan says:

This development will help Tata Motors in India shortly, they will be able to manufacture high performance and tax efficient 1500cc diesel engine for their sub 4 meter vehicles rather then depending on 1300 cc multijet engine from Fiat with dated technology. The modular design will allow this swiftly, the engine can be tuned for delivering close to 135 PS power, which will be class leading.

Hi, what happened to your earlier erroneous IAB reports of best in the class fuel efficiency of 35KPL?

        Hi Shrawan,
Sorry, I wrote it wrong. Can you find out how are they going to deliver 25 kmpl on a 200 hp, 2.0 l engine?
        Thanks

      2. Hello! No problem, the 25+kmpl is their projection.

Now the company would not mention this publicly if they weren’t expecting the certification body to deliver a comparable result.

While the engine itself should be made with the latest technologies (JLR say its a clean sheet design), the fact that the car is made of (75 percent) aluminium results in serious weight savings, the car is the smallest and most aerodynamic Jaguar ever made (0.26 Cd) and the eight-speed gearbox should all aid the cause. The variant that returns this mileage has been tuned to deliver just 163 PS.

Either way we will wait for the official certification, either from Europe or USA.

      3. Dr. Nayak says:

        Hi Shrawan,
At the end this is going to be blamed on poor math skills of British engineers.
