1.3- and 1.6-liter diesel engines are expected to be offered on the crossover.
A report on Gaadi Waadi states that the upcoming Maruti SX4 S-Cross will be sold with two diesel engine options and no petrol. The crossover, which is expected to launch in India early next year, will see Maruti compete with the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Ford EcoSport.
The diesel engines that will power the S-Cross will be a 1.3-liter four-cylinder unit and a 1.6-liter four-cylinder, according to the report. It is highly likely the smaller engine will be Fiat's 1.3-liter MultiJet motor which is already used by Maruti in several cars like the Swift, Ritz, Ertiga and SX4. The Fiat engine is capable of producing 75 PS (73.94 bhp) in small cars like the Swift and 90 PS (88.73 bhp) in larger cars like the Ertiga and SX4. The 90 PS tune would find favor in the S-Cross considering its body size.
The 1.6-liter diesel engine could either be a Fiat-sourced MultiJet unit, or a Peugeot-sourced DV6 HDi engine. The Peugeot engine too is available in two power states of 90 PS (88.73 bhp) and 110 PS (108.45 bhp), with the more powerful version likely to power the S-Cross. In Europe, the S-Cross is offered with the 1.6-liter Fiat diesel engine and a Suzuki-developed 1.6-liter petrol.
