The VW Polo facelift is set to be launched in India on July 15th. The premium hatchback receives minor styling upgrades but the biggest change comes from the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that will replace the current 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit.

The new 1.5-litre diesel engine of the VW Polo facelift is available in two states of tune.

Carsizzler has uploaded the image of what is supposedly a VW service training document, revealing the engine specifications of the facelifted model. The new diesel motor, as reported earlier, generates power in two states of tune – 88.2 bhp (90 PS) and 230 Nm of torque, and 102.9 bhp (105 PS) and 250 Nm of torque.

The document suggests that both the versions employ a VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) and claims that the new engine provides a flat torque curve, low emissions, ‘super acceleration’ and ‘outstanding power efficiency’. The base variant of the engine produces a good 14.7 bhp (15 PS) and 50 Nm of torque more than the outgoing 1.2-litre diesel engine.

The VW Polo facelift will be launched in India on July 15.

The updated Polo GT TDI ditches the 1.6-litre diesel engine that was borrowed from the Vento in favor of the 102.9 bhp version of the new 1.5-litre mill. The power and torque figures stay identical to the 1.6-litre engine but crucially, the new powerplant makes the Polo GT TDI eligible for the huge sub-4 metre excise duty concession of 18%. If VW decides to pass this concession fully to the customers, the facelifted Polo GT TDI will be significantly cheaper than the current model.

The more powerful variant of the new diesel engine will also find its place under the facelifted VW Vento’s hood in the future.

As far as the petrol lineup is concerned, the current 1.2-litre three cylinder engine and the GT TSI’s 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged motor continue untouched with a 5-speed manual and 7-speed DSG respectively.

Competitors: Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Tata Bolt, Fiat Punto

Expected Price: INR 5-8 lakhs, ex-Showroom

I have been eagerly waiting for the facelifted Polo. My question is : will the 1.2 TSI optionally be available with a 5 speed manual? This will be the icing on the cake for an enthusiast like me, as well as many others!

    1. Hi Tharun, we don’t know that yet, but we’ll find out within a few days.

  3. Sachin says:

The GT TDI might now lose it’s value over a regular highline diesel. Any idea if there are any goodies or features that are GT TDI only — DSG maybe?

  4. chirag says:

what about ground clearance? Have they made any change. Plz make it 185 – 190mm, instead of 165mm.

    1. Hello Chirag, we have no confirmation on this, we’ll know shortly. The vehicle launches on the 15th of this month.

  5. Gaurav says:

Great move. Hope polo now enjoys it’s well deserved share in the market.
