Indian Autos Blog reader, Tarun Tripathy, snapped the upcoming Tata Bolt and Tata Zest near the city of Bangalore recently. The two cars are eagerly anticipated launches from the company, and were revealed publicly in February this year at the Auto Expo.
Based on the Tata Vista's platform, the Bolt is heavily redesigned inside and outside, taking aim at the Hyundai i20, Maruti Swift, VW Polo and the upcoming Honda Jazz. The Zest on the other hand, is a compact sub-4 meter sedan based on the Bolt that will rival the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Maruti Dzire.
Both cars come with Tata's newly developed petrol engine. The 1.2-liter unit, called Revotron, features turbocharging and outputs 85 PS of power at 5,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque between 1,750-3,000 rpm. The petrol models are announced to get a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The diesel engine is the 1.3-liter unit from Fiat. On the Bolt, this engine produces 75 PS at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque between 1,750-3,000 rpm, while it makes 90 PS and 200 Nm of torque on the Zest. For now, Tata have announced the diesel Zest with a 5-speed manual and the diesel Zest with a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), and we hear the Bolt will also get the latter in future.
