Report – 2015 Skoda Rapid diesel to get DSG gearbox, 1.5L diesel engine; launch in October

Skoda India will fit the Skoda Rapid diesel with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and launch it in October 2014. For this, it will opt for a 1.5-liter diesel engine to power the sedan.

A report on the Economic Times states that the Rapid will move closer to its cousin in VW – the Vento – and offer a 1.2-liter petrol engine as well. The sedan will not get a facelift, retaining its old looks. Changes, however, will be made to the interiors and more equipment will be offered as standard, the report says.

Besides the DSG gearbox, the Rapid diesel will also get a 5-speed manual gearbox. The current Rapid is powered by a 1.6-liter engine and the move to a smaller 1.5-liter engine will give excise benefits, allowing the Rapid to be priced more competitively.

While the Vento TSI is offered with a 1.2-liter petrol engine and a DSG gearbox, the diesel variant is still offered only with the manual gearbox. The Rapid, Vento and Polo are built on the same platform that was originally intended to underpin the Polo hatchback.

Competition from the wildly successful Honda City diesel has forced Skoda’s hands, the report says, into both downsizing the diesel engine and offering an automatic.

    Hi Karthik,
    I understand VW is bringing out the polo stuffe under 4mtrs sedan. How are they going to fit the boot without seriously fiddling around with the engine section to make it smaller because the rear seats are as it is cramped. Please comment

    I have been following the articles on Skoda Rapid facelift since almost 8 months now. There has hardly been any article that I have not read.

    surprisingly, every commenter differs with other and every next time there is a contradiction. Adding to it, now this article says there will be no facelift for the upcoming Rapid. However, if we go by the speculations and comments, we expected Rapid to go through a subtle chiseling and fall in line with the new Skoda design language.

    Gentlemen, I bet, no one has a thorough knowledge of what is going on! all comments and renders are simply misleading. now I am a firm believer that “do not trust any render or self acclaimed motor freaks till you actually see the launch” all of these guys just write for the sake of it. No one has correct information.

    Believe me, no company shares its plans and strategies to any one, do not trust speculated renders at all.

    these articles are a total nonsense to mislead readers.

    Cud some one please guide me if there is a real difference between suspension setup and nvh levels of a rapid and a vento diesel variants…planning to buy either of these….

    Polo is < 4M (3970 ) and if it gets diesel mill 1.5 + DSG is very much eligible for excise benefits. Hence this should be able launch around 8 to 8.25 L price range…

    Vento/Rapid will not get any excise benefits. But polo 1.5 Diesel + DSG will be eligible for excise benefits. Hence I am guessing they will price around 8 laks ex-showroom. But one question though is this really confirmed by VW or Skoda? Is it just a rumor?

    No….it will not be eligible for tax benefits as it doesn’t fall under 4 meter norm. (Norm: length<4 meter and Engine< Diesel 1.5lt / Petrol 1.2lt.)
