Report – Auto Expo premiere Renault Kwid to launch in 2016

British publication Auto Express has reported that the Renault Kwid, launched as concept at the 2014 Auto Expo, received the green light for a 2016 launch. The Kwid is the first Renault concept car made for an overseas motorshow debut.
Auto Express reports that the production version of the Renault Kwid would measure about four meters long – essential for it to receive excise benefits in India – and slots below the Duster. The concept measured just 3.6 m, but the production version would be extended, yet is 150 mm shorter than the Captur, the smallest crossover in Renault’s stable.
Renault could to stick to the Kwid name on the production model (like with the Renault Captur) although the styling would be a lot more conservative.
Expressions from Renault’s latest design language like the curvaceous body panels, large grille and a rugged underbody protection would adorn the production vehicle, albeit in a toned-down manner, to create a muscular look. Renault could also offer some level of customization, such as the contrasting roof color.
Auto Express does not speak of diesel engines, limiting the Kwid’s powertrain choice to the 0.9L TCe petrol engine used on the new Twingo. Renault India would be looking at the 1.5-liter K9K diesel engine seriously as it already powers sub-4m B-Segment models like the Renault Pulse and the Nissan Micra.
Starting price in the UK is predicted at £11,500 (11.33 lakhs) but don’t read too much into it when estimating the Indian price, as a sub-4m sub-Duster model would have to be positioned in the 5-8 lakh rupee bracket, to have any significant volume contribution.
